2024 Indigenous Pre-Convocation Celebration for Brockville and Cornwall
Indigenous Services was thrilled to host the second pre-convocation celebration to Honor the remarkable achievements of the Graduates of 2024. Evening celebrations began with a wonderful and personal Land Acknowledgment from Cornwall Campus Dean, Jennifer Haley, followed by some encouraging words and future insights to the newest SLC Alumni from Shelley Aylesworth-Spink, VP of Student Affairs. Each student was ‘gifted a blanket’ and were ceremonially wrapped in it. Bestowing a blanket to mark big achievements is a cultural practice shared among many different Indigenous Communities. Historically, it was common to use blankets in trade, give as gifts, offer to record community history and for some blankets hold deep meaning & traditions linked to birth, life & death. Blankets were and continue to be elemental in ceremonial practices for Indigenous peoples and are integral to ceremonial celebrations such as weddings, naming, coming of age and puberty rights to name a few.

This term, our students took their first swipe—not on human skin, but on the fuzzy surface of kiwis!
Student Experience Survey Launches June 10
SLC’s Student Experience Survey launches on Monday, June 10 for students in their second semester or higher at SLC. The survey is an excellent chance for our students to provide feedback and insight into their needs and experiences. It would be helpful if faculty could mention the survey to students in their class, as high student engagement with the survey becomes an effective tool to help change the College for the better!
