Local construction firm awarded St. Lawrence College contract

2018-01-08

A major renovation contract at St. Lawrence College (SLC) was awarded to Wemp & Smith Construction Ltd, located in Harrowsmith, ON; the contract is part of the largest expansion and renewal project in the history of the SLC’s Kingston campus.

Wemp &Smith was awarded the contract for the Newcourt House renovation (Stage 4A of the Hello Future Project). This heritage-designated building will house the new Centre for Behavioural Studies, an applied research centre dedicated to advancing the science and practice of behavioural analysis by growing research opportunities for faculty and students and enhancing services to practitioners and clients.

The project is targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDTM) certification through the Canada Green Building Council, a mark of excellence for green building in over 160 countries. The Newcourt House renovation is among the few historically designated buildings seeking LEEDTM certification in Kingston.

“We’re delighted to work with Wemp & Smith Construction on this exciting project. The renovation will allow the Centre for Behavioural Studies at St. Lawrence College to have its own dedicated space in a beautiful heritage building, where they can be proud to welcome members of our community and where our students will receive first-class experiential learning opportunities,” said Glenn Vollebregt, President and CEO, St. Lawrence College.

Newcourt House was built in 1842 and previously was home to the Women’s Medical College and subsequently the residence for the Ontario Hospital Farm. Early in SLC’s history this building contained the offices of the college president. For many years, Newcourt House served as a lab school for the Early Childhood Education program and daycare centre.

Construction will begin January 2018 to be completed August 2018.
