St. Lawrence College students bring The Threepenny Opera to the stage

BROCKVILLE, ON – Travel back to Victorian London and become captivated by the story of the notorious thief MacHeath in performances of The Threepenny Opera, presented by the St. Lawrence College Music Theatre – Performance program at the Brockville Arts Centre from October 18 to 21.

The Threepenny Opera is a musical in three acts with books and lyrics by Bertolt Brecht and music by composer Kurt Weill. Adapted from the 18th century play The Beggar’s Opera by John Gay, The Threepenny Opera was first performed in Berlin in 1928. It has been translated into 18 languages and performed more than 10,000 times across Europe and North America.

A biting commentary on bourgeois capitalism and modern morality, The Threepenny Opera follows MacHeath, an outlaw known as Mack the Knife, as he faces the consequences of his marriage to the daughter of Soho’s underworld boss.

“As the Occupy Wall Street movement continues across the US and Canada, The Threepenny Opera is incredibly relevant as a satirical piece of theatre that questions capitalism,” said Michael Bianchin, director and Music Theatre – Performance program coordinator at St. Lawrence College. “Audiences will love the jazz-influenced score and may recognize well-known songs including ‘Mack the Knife’ and ‘Pirate Jenny’, which have been recorded by many popular jazz artists.”

The Threepenny Opera premiered on Broadway at the Empire Theatre on April 13, 1933 but ran for only 12 performances. It was revived for Broadway and off-Broadway productions in 1956, 1976, 1989, and 2006. Most recently, the Brooklyn Academy of Music presented a production of The Threepenny Opera in October 2011.
