Memorial run honours firefighters, raises funds for bursaries

BROCKVILLE, ON - St. Lawrence College Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training alumni Shane Williams and Josh Mossimo are holding their annual 10k memorial run, the Tyrone Wilson and Gary Rutley Memorial Run, at 10:00am on Saturday, October 13, 2012. The run will raise funds for the Tyrone Wilson and Gary Rutley Memorial Bursaries.

Shane and Josh have raised thousands of dollars over the past four years to help Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training students in financial need, while also honouring the memory of their friend and former classmate, Tyrone Wilson. Last year, Captain Gary Rutley, participated in the run. After the stunning news of his passing, Shane and Josh immediately sought to honour Captain Rutley in their efforts.

“We started The Tyrone Wilson Memorial Run in memory of our friend and classmate, who died in 2009. Tyrone was a graduate of the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program at St. Lawrence College and a firefighter with the Cardinal Fire Department. He was a good friend, a dedicated firefighter and someone committed to helping others,” said Shane. “When our program coordinator Captain Gary Rutley suddenly passed away last October, we knew that we had to honour both men. Captain Rutley gave everything for his students… he was dedicated, compassionate and a role model for all, including Tyrone.”

This run and the bursaries it supports ensures that students in financial need, who share Tyrone and Captain Rutley's commitment to helping others, will get the help they need. Every dollar raised goes to the bursaries and the interest earned will continue to help students for many years to come.

On Wednesday, October 10, from 5:00-8:00pm, Boston Pizza on Parkedale Avenue will donate 10% of sales to the bursaries.

Participants will meet at 10:00am at St. Lawrence College’s Brockville campus; transportation will be provided to the Maitland Fire Hall, where the run will begin.
