High school students experience college with Dual Credits

In the last seven years, the Dual Credit program at St. Lawrence College has grown exponentially. From just 13 students in 2005 at the Kingston Campus, this school year the college has more than 600 high school students taking a college course across our three campuses.

Dual Credit programs allow high school students to take college or apprenticeship courses that count toward their high school diploma and a college certificate, diploma, or an apprenticeship certification. “The ministry approved Dual Credit programs provides students with an opportunity to gain exposure to college courses and programs, providing them with the experience and confidence to make better informed decisions about their post-secondary pathway,” said Pat Garrod, School-College-Work Initiatives Coordinator for St. Lawrence College.

This School-College-Work Initiative assists senior high school students both financially and educationally. They may take up to four college courses, choosing from over 100 courses in Community Services, Business, Health Sciences, Applied Science & Computing, Skilled Trades and Justice Studies & the Applied Arts. While attending their college course, high school students are supported by a Dual Credit teacher from their school board.

“It is essential that more people attain post-secondary education and training as 70 per cent of all new jobs require a college or university credential, said Chris Whitaker, President and CEO of St. Lawrence College. "The Dual Credit Program ensures that more students get the education they need to succeed in the coming years."

Dual Credit applications are currently being accepted for winter semester at St. Lawrence College. Students should contact their high school guidance counselor, or Student Success team to review the courses and complete the Dual Credit application.
