WaterWorks to open June 9 at St. Lawrence College

St. Lawrence College is pleased to present WaterWorks, on view at the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery on the Brockville campus June 9 to July 20, 2011.

WaterWorks is a juried exhibition of watercolours by elected members of The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour/ La Société canadienne de Peintres en Aquarelle. The Society was founded in 1925 by some of the most illustrious artists in Canadian art history. The founding artists were: F.H. Brigden, A.J. Casson, Franklin Carmichael, C.W. Jefferys, Fred S. Haines, L.A.C. Panton, R.F. Gagen, Thomas G. Greene, Robert Holmes, Franz Johnston, Andre Lapine, and E.J. Sampson.

The CSPWC/SCPA continues to encourage experimentation while honouring the transparent tradition of the medium, and is recognized as Canada’s official national watercolour society. The Society presents regional, national and international exhibitions, organizes workshops and demonstrations across the country.

The Society also collects contemporary and historical Canadian watercolours. The CSPWC/SCPA Diploma Collection, housed at the Art Gallery of Peel since 1995 in Brampton (Peel), currently contains over 335 watercolour paintings and a portfolio of watercolours by CSPWC members is part of the permanent collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle. These 75 watercolours are held within the fabled Royal Library as "The Canadian Gift". The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour is one of the few organizations outside of the United Kingdom to be represented in the Royal Collections.

This exhibit, with works being brought in from across Canada, is part of the 85th anniversary celebration tied to the Water Works Water Media and Watercolour Symposium being held June 6-10 in Ottawa, the 1st Great Canadian Paint Out in the Byward Market, Ottawa on June 11 and the Thousand Island Food and Wine Festival held the weekend of June 17 in Brockville.
