Construction begins on Alumni Pavilion

Construction is set to start this June on the SLC Brockville Alumni Pavilion as a lasting landmark to be enjoyed by alumni, students, staff, and all community friends of the college. For the past six years the Alumni Branch has hosted a popular semi-annual Comedy Night as a fundraiser for the campus Student Emergency Fund, as well as for the Pavilion project. Additional funds were secured from the St. Lawrence College Foundation to purchase the materials.

Construction of the pavilion is also taking place in partnership with the Centre for Training & Development. The Branch initiated discussion with Training & Development Specialist Mike Laking after witnessing a series of projects completed on campus through the Pre-Construction Training Program. Knowing that the Pre-construction program would provide the manpower to build the Pavilion, the Branch went to work on a design and a list of required materials. A Field Supervisor, Kevin Anthony, has been hired to oversee the building of the Pavilion with the youth in the program as the builders. Under Kevin's tutelage, the youth will learn valuable construction and building skills that will help them find and secure work in the construction fields following completion of the program. The youth will be certified in 1st Aid/CPR, WHMIS and Fall Arrest and will receive assistance in developing their resume and interviewing skills and upgrade their math skills.

"I'm so grateful to both the St. Lawrence College Foundation and the Centre for Training & Development for bringing a dream project to life," said Branch President Keith Hare. "I can't wait for June to follow the progress of the construction. There are also many Alumni Branch members who have volunteered over the years to keep the Branch alive so that projects like this become possible. They will all be recognized in a ceremony later this summer at - where else - the St. Lawrence College Brockville Alumni Pavilion!"
