Students test skills at competition March 31

Animation, carpentry, plumbing, robotics, fashion and graphic design, are just a few of the more than 30 skilled trades and technology events that students will compete in during the 8th Annual Limestone Skills Competition at St. Lawrence College, Kingston Campus, Wednesday, March 31, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This exciting partnership between the Limestone District School Board (LDSB), and St. Lawrence College continues to grow with more than 300 students and 75 judges showcasing the skills and talents applied in experiential education at both the elementary and secondary levels.

The focus of the competition is to provide a public forum that highlights the skills and knowledge students have gained in their particular field of interest. The annual competition is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate their talent and creativity putting all of their skills to the test against peers and the current industry standards. Students are given specific tasks to perform, or scenarios to complete, within a predetermined time frame that will be judged by industry specialists.

This year the competition has added Floral Design and a Baking event that will require the use of additional facilities at nearby Loyalist Collegiate Vocational Institute (153 Van Order Drive.) All of the events will occur on the same day in two locations, including Auto Service which will also move to the LCVI facility. Elementary robotics and all the familiar and traditional sector competitions such as, Manufacturing, Construction and Hospitality will be held in the south block of St. Lawrence while Fashion Design, Photography and Graphic Design will be in the new LINK building.

Secondary winners will have the opportunity to advance to the Regional competition also held at St. Lawrence College on April 17th, and the Provincial competition in Kitchener Waterloo May 17-19th, which will also host the Elementary Challenges.
