Amanda Moraal

My name is Amanda Moraal and I am a third-year graphic design student at St. Lawrence College. I have a passion for creative solutions, strategic thinking, organization and problem-solving. Growing up, I have always had an artistic way of viewing any situation and have carried this throughout my life in everything I do from hobbies to employment. I excel at leading, organizing and motivating myself and others when completing a task or solving a problem. That is why I have chosen to pursue an education and career in graphic design; I want to create design solutions that serve a purpose and enhance lives while looking good in the process.

Typography III

Objective

The objective of this project was to develop a poster with strong visual language that would represent the tone of voice throughout the entire “Sink or Swim” conference campaign.

Description

For the overall design of this poster, I wanted to create a birds-eye view of a large body of water with a life preserver drifting away. This visually and metaphorically represents the title “Sink or Swim” which ultimately suggests that if we choose to swim, with hard work and perseverance we can reach the life preserver that will positively impact the future of our water sources.  By taking a simplistic approach to the visual design I was able to keep the overall look and feel clean and free of clutter while applying it to all the elements required within the campaign.

While designing the booklet I also had to establish a hierarchy of the content. The was established by using various font weights and sizes and graphic visuals to help establish the rule of thirds as well as colour to highlight key factors in the layout and content.

Finally, when designing the layout of the website I was required to work with the grids to help determine the content and graphic placement within each breakpoint.

Brand Identity Design II

Objective

This was a class assignment where I was required to choose a not-for-profit organization that I felt needed assistance with its brand identity. So for this, I chose Joe's M.I.L.L. because in the past I had the opportunity to work with this organization on a website redesign and I had learned so much about who they are and how they impact the community so I felt that by redesigning their logo I could help showcase their message more effectively more clearly through the power of visual communication.

Description

The idea behind this logo redesign stemmed from Joe’s M.I.L.L. core values, to bring the community of Kingston together through its love of music. Therefore, in the design, I chose to use the symbol of a musical note to communicate with the audience what Joe’s M.I.L.L. does, or at least what they are associated with, and that is music. Secondly, rather than using a solid musical note, I decided to incorporate figures of people holding hands representing the community. By doing this, I feel that it has a cleaner and more professional look in comparison to their current logo and it is easier for their audience to identify with.

Agency Capstone

Objective

The purpose of this project was to identify and research a local design problem that I had a passion for. The design problem I chose to focus on was the disconnect between St. College education and developing talented designers and the community of Kingston employing these designers. Through the design thinking processes, I had to identify a current design problem research why it is a problem, how it had become a problem and what steps were required to solve the problem.

Description

The Kingston Design Community or "The KDC" is a platform I created for my final year capstone project.  This project was a way for me to demonstrate the skills and techniques I have learned throughout my time in the St. Lawrence College Graphic Design Program. Based on the research portion it was established that an online support platform for local designers would be detrimental to new St. Lawrence College Graphic Design graduates that wish to seek local employment.  During my research phase, I established the basic mandates that my target audience required to assist them with their employment needs. Some of these mandates were, a place to find graphic design-specific employment opportunities, a way to filter through these opportunities based on the individual’s needs and requirements and a local mentorship program for those wanting to start their own business or work as a freelance designer.
