Pre-Service Firefighter students raise $2,600 for Palliative Care

St. Lawrence College Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training students raised $2,600 for Palliative Care at Brockville General Hospital. This brings the total amount raised for Palliative Care by SLC Pre-Service Firefighter students to $10,000 in the last five years.

The funds were presented to Brockville and District Hospital Foundation at a brief presentation at the Rutley Training Tower today on the College’s Brockville campus. Students in the Pre-Service Firefighter program have a tradition of fundraising for a local cause or organization, typically gravitating towards palliative care due to its importance for the Brockville community and the students’ own personal experiences with family members requiring palliative care and their appreciation for the ability to die with dignity.

While Pre-Service Firefighter students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer hours during their one-year program, the fundraising is done in addition to any program requirements and is completely run by students who wish to continue the tradition of giving back to the community in which they study. This year, the students raised $2,600 by developing, designing, and selling calendars.
