artist statement
People raise eyebrows when I describe myself as a dilettante, for it is a dangerous, two-edged word, having collected plenty of negative connotations. I refer to its original sense: a lover of art: one who delights in art. I do love art; beautiful and terrible ways of seeing, interpreting, and trying to understand the world and our place in it. Shapes and colours combine with ideas and stories. Gardening, Ikebana, writing and fibre are for me all forms of artistic expression.
I enjoy making fibre art with a variety of techniques: this show has examples of soft sculptures which incorporate stories, hand and machine stitching, and even a bit of wire-crochet. I’ll miss the little devil, who usually keeps my morning coffee hot! (Unlike the others, he’s completely washable.) The wall pieces have minimal actual stitching; they utilize airpen writing for story-telling and the texture is usually achieved through stitching.
