About Multi-factor Authentication

SLC’s internet-accessible services are constantly subject to illicit login attempts from people seeking to install malware and ransomware, searching for mailboxes from which to send spam, hunting for data for identity theft, or attempting to steal intellectual property.

Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a proven technique to prevent your account from being used in these attacks. It relies on something you know and something you have.

DUO IT SERVICES

Once your SLC account is MFA-enabled, your login to slc.me and the applications within it are protected by Duo. This is accomplished by using your SLC username and password (something you know) with a Duo token, or Duo Mobile application running on a smartphone or tablet (something you have).

Should someone steal your password and attempt to use your account to access slc.me they will be denied access without your Duo token or Duo Mobile application.

Setting Up Duo (Faculty and Staff)

Step 1:  Obtain a Duo Token from your Campus ITS Staff and Test slc.me Sign-on.

Step 2:  Register your SLC iPhone for Duo Mobile, or personal smartphone or tablet (optional)
Sign into slc.me.
Click the Duo button.
Register your smartphone or tablet.  If you have an SLC iPhone please register it first. You may setup your personal smartphone or tablet after your SLC iPhone. If you don’t have an SLC iPhone you have the option of adding a personal device.

Detailed Registration Steps:

Select a device type (smart phone or tablet).
For SLC smartphones enter the phone number. If you are setting up a personal smartphone you may select tablet if you do not want to provide your personal smartphone number.
Check your device for the Duo Mobile application. For SLC iPhones, it should already be installed. If it isn’t installed download it from your device provider’s application store.
When launching the Duo Mobile application, allow the application to access your device camera and to send notifications if you are prompted. Both of these permissions are required to setup and use Duo Mobile.
Open the Duo Mobile application and select the plus sign (+) from the top right of the application then scan the QR code to activate it. Ensure that the full QR code is visible and that it isn’t obstructed by the mouse pointer.
After you have completed the setup, please sign out of slc.me and test that you are able to sign back in and complete the Duo push notification process with approval on your device. In a situation where you do not have access to data on your device, you can still use the passcode provided in the Duo Mobile application to sign-in.

**If you have any issues completing the setup, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance. IT Service desk hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.

Once your Duo setup has completed:
1. Log into slc.me as you normally would. You will be prompted each time you sign into slc.me to validate your identity with Duo.
2. Specify whether you’d like to receive a push notification, or passcode from your Duo token or Duo Mobile app. In a situation where you do not have access to data on your device, you can still use the passcode provided in the Duo Mobile application to sign-in.
3.  Acknowledge the notification on your device or enter the passcode as requested.

FAQs

Q1. What is Duo multi-factor authentication?
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is the industry standard for login security. MFA protects your accounts and data if your password is ever compromised.
Q2. What do you need in order to use Duo MFA?
You can use a Duo token or the Duo Mobile app running on a smartphone or tablet. Using the push notification on a Duo Mobile application is the most convenient method: just press “approve” on the Duo Mobile app. Using the push notification requires data or Wi-Fi on the device running the Duo Mobile app. In a situation where you do not have access to data on your device, you can still use the passcode provided in the Duo Mobile application to sign-in.
Q3. I don’t have a smartphone or tablet. How can I use Duo?
We are providing all staff with a Duo token that can provide a secure passcode if you chose not to use (or do not have) a smartphone or tablet.
Q4. What if I forget my device?
You can set up multiple devices with Duo such as a smartphone and a tablet or Duo token. If you have lost access to your device(s) you can contact the IT Service Desk for assistance. IT Service desk hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.
Q5. Do I need to use data for Duo Mobile?
You do not require data to use the Duo Mobile application. In a situation where you do not have access to data on your device, you can still use the passcode provided in the Duo Mobile application to sign-in. Push notifications do require data.
Q6. I lost my Duo token or Duo Mobile device, what should I do?
Contact the IT Service Desk. The staff can help you access your account and get you set back up.
