The St. Lawrence Surge competed in the very first official OCR Outdoor Cricket Tournament on July 11th. While the team had to settle for a fourth-place finish, they did not come back empty handed as they were awarded with the Fair Play Award which is given to a team that showed a high level of sportsmanship and respect for the game.
“It may not sound like much, but for this team, many of whom played indoor, it is a big thing” said head coach, Malcolm Anderson. “They have come a long way, especially some of the individuals. They took photos of themselves holding it at the tournament, and on the bus ride home I passed it around the bus and asked that they sign it.”
The team’s bus driver, Michael, used to play cricket and thoroughly enjoyed his time with the team. So much so that the student-athletes insisted he be in the team picture and that he drive the team to all future tournaments.
The Surge cricket team plays in two more outdoor tournaments (July 27th at Centennial College and August 3 at Sheridan College) before transitioning back to indoor play in the Fall ’23 term.
