Spotlight on SLC Skilled Trades

SLC is proud to share recent highlights and achievements of its students, alumni, staff, and faculty from the School of Skilled Trades. These stories illustrate how students are equipped with training and skills to become leaders in their fields, and the dedication and commitment of staff and faculty in providing training while meeting the evolving needs of local labour markets.

SLC student Nathan Orr, General Machinist - Apprenticeship program won gold at the 2024 Ontario Skills Competition and bronze in the 2024 Skills Canada National Competition. Read more about Nathan’s national recognition.

SLC student Diana Olivar, Environmental Technician program received the 2024 Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) Student Recognition Award. Diana also received the 2024 Desjardins Ontario Credit Union Leadership Scholarship.

SLC alumnus Saifullah Sanaye, Automotive Service Technician – Apprenticeship program received a 2023 Premier’s Award in the Apprenticeship category. SLC is proud to have Saifullah on its faculty, sharing his passion and skills with the Eastern Ontario community in the Automotive Service Technician program on the Cornwall campus.

SLC alumna Melissa Phelan, Welding and Fabrication Technician program received a 2021 Premier’s Award in the Apprenticeship category. Recognized as a “woman to watch” in the trades, in 2022 SLC released the Melissa Phelan Premier’s Award Bursary, providing needs-based support to women-identifying individuals in the Welding and Fabrication Technician program

SLC School of Skilled Trades staff and faculty are doing great things in our communities. Check out these recent highlights: 


SLC consults with local industry and community partners on program development using Program Advisory Committees (PACs). In spring 
2024, SLC’s Daniel Liao, Dean, Faculty of Technology and Trades, and Faculty of Applied Science and Technology hosted the first-ever Skilled Trades “Super” PAC bringing together nearly 100 tri-campus industry leaders and community members to discuss updates to Technology and Trades programs Read more here.


SLC’s Barry Botham, Professor, General Carpentry received the 2024 Barry C. O’Connor Excellence in Education Award from Limestone District School Board. The award recognizes Barry’s outstanding involvement in Interdisciplinary Studies and Pathways and advancement of the skilled trades. Read more here


SLC is the proud annual host of the Eastern Ontario Skills Competition in Cornwall, and Limestone Skills Competition in Kingston. The competitions bring together hundreds of elementary and secondary students and several area school boards to showcase skills across the skilled trades.
