The research capstone programs at SLC bring real-world challenges into the classroom, offering students hands-on experiences that address current industry needs. This fall, a unique collaboration with GreenReach Farms, an urban AgriTech start-up in Gananoque, is allowing SLC students to explore sustainable agriculture in a tangible way.
On November 1, students and faculty from Biotechnology Advanced, Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology, and Energy Systems Engineering Technology programs visited GreenReach Farms to expand their understanding of urban farming innovations. The group also included Robyn Saaltink, Executive Director of Research; Daniel Liao, Dean of Applied Science; Brad Barbeau, Associate Dean; and professors Steve White, Candace Scott, and Houcine Houssa.
During the visit, students toured the farm, explored Agreo’s grow towers, and participated in a Q&A session with Steve Duff, Chief Economist for Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture. Steve shared insights into the evolving economics of agriculture, highlighting both historical and emerging trends that are shaping the sector.
This collaboration with GreenReach exemplifies SLC’s commitment to applied research, preparing students for meaningful careers where they can make a tangible impact. By engaging in these real-world challenges, students build essential problem-solving and technical skills, bringing valuable insights back to the classroom and gaining experience that will benefit their future roles.
