With a new semester and season comes a renewed effort to reduce the waste we send to landfills with the Cano reusable container and mug program. You can help reduce our footprint at SLC by participating in this free program. Help us build on this success and continue reducing waste at SLC.
Participation rates for September 2023:
- 140 new users registered (a 22% increase in September)
- 100 containers saved from landfills
- 293 coffee cups saved from landfills
- 11.76 kg of waste avoided
- 54.88 metric tons of CO2 emissions (and greenhouse gases) avoided
- 173 rewards earned by users
Here’s How to Get Involved:
- Download the free Cano app on your iphone or android
- Scan the QR code on the Cano container at any SLC cafeteria or coffee kiosk.
- Scan the QR code at the cashier to complete the borrowing process.
- When finished, simply return your cup or container to any Cano return box. Scan the QR code and drop your item inside. SLC will wash, sanitize, and reuse the product saving it from landfill.
How Do I Get Points?
When you return your Cano cup or container to one of our bins within 48 hours of borrowing, you will receive 10 points for every cup returned, and 20 points for a container. You will also receive 100 bonus points just for signing up -- enough to enjoy a free coffee!
How Can I Redeem My Points?
-100 points = free medium coffee or tea
-250 points = free side
-500 points = 25% discount on any entrée
Cano Report: Overall Numbers
Since launching in March 2023, we have seen an inspiring uptake of participants in the Cano program dedicated to helping SLC reduce waste.
Total numbers since March 2023:
- 638 users registered across three campuses
- 880 containers saved from landfills
- 1,500 cups saved from landfills
- 72.66 kg of waste avoided.
- 339.08 metric tons of CO2 emissions (and greenhouse gases) avoided.
- 549 rewards earned by users.
Kingston Campus – Cano Booths
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday Sustainability will be in the cafeteria promoting the Cano reusable cups and container program from 11:00-1:00 p.m. Stop by to learn more or if you have questions, if you would like to volunteer with us, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Jadon (jhook@sl.on.ca)
