On January 16, Aidan Wornes and I were pleased to attend as Iohahi:io Akwesasne Education & Training Institute marked another milestone with the grand opening of Kaheri:io (pronounced "Gahalee-yeeyo") a state-of-the-art trades training facility that significantly expands their educational capabilities.
The 4,000-square-foot facility houses a comprehensive trades training complex, featuring a carpentry and framing shop, a welding shop equipped with downdraft tables and advanced multi-process machines, and a dedicated classroom space. The welding shop's capabilities are particularly noteworthy, as it supports instruction in most industrial welding processes across all positions.
This development follows Iohahi:io's recent recognition as an Indigenous post-secondary institution in October, which Jennifer Haley, Cornwall Campus Dean, attended on behalf of SLC, a designation that enables the institute to offer credentialed trades programs. The new Kaheri:io facility represents a significant step forward in Iohahi:io's mission to provide comprehensive trades education and training opportunities for the community.
The facility's opening marks a new chapter in technical education at Iohahi:io, creating pathways for students to gain hands-on experience in high-demand trades while earning recognized credentials in their chosen fields.
