Harmonizing Beauty and Science: A Chemical Collaboration

A student in protective gear working in a lab

Submitted by Aba Mortley, Professor, Esthethics, School of Trades

In an exciting initiative this term, students in our Esthetics program embarked on a fascinating journey into the realm of chemistry, exploring the science behind the skincare products they use professionally. The program's initial stages introduced them to fundamental chemical concepts including types of matter, mixture classification, chemical bonding, and pH levels.

To elevate their learning from theory to practice, we orchestrated an engaging collaboration with the  Biotechnology, Advanced program’s Analytical Chemistry department, guided by experts Steve White and Delina Melo. This partnership enabled our students to experiment hands-on, using advanced analytical tools to examine the pH of various skincare products. This practical approach deepened their understanding of how certain ingredients function in facial products and their interactions with the skin to promote health and vitality.

In our laboratory sessions, students delved into the analysis of state changes, homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, immiscible solutions, emulsifying agents, and importantly, pH monitoring of numerous skincare products.

We are excited about the ongoing collaboration between these two programs, as it not only enriches our students' educational experience but also expands their engagement and understanding in these intersecting fields.
