On June 12 SLC welcomed a group of students from the Secretaria de Investigación, Innovación y Educación Superior (SIIES) for an enriching English and Cultural Immersion summer program on the Kingston campus. The program lasted for three weeks, offering the students the opportunity to learn, explore, and immerse themselves in the vibrant city of Kingston.
Throughout the program the students gained invaluable knowledge and experiences that broadened their horizons and enhanced their understanding of the English language and Canadian culture.
As one student shared: “I learned new techniques to improve my English, especially in improvisation and in writing. I also learned a lot about the culture of Canada and the culture of Indigenous people.”
During the first week, students explored Kingston with guided tours to some of the city's prominent landmarks, including Fort Henry, City Hall, and Bellevue House. These excursions allowed the students to delve into the rich history and heritage of the region while also improving their English language skills through interaction with local guides and fellow program participants.
In addition to exploring Kingston, the students traveled to Ottawa to experience the grandeur of the Parliament Buildings, visit museums, and experience Ottawa’s multicultural atmosphere. During the second week the students visited Niagara Falls.
On campus, the students felt a strong sense of belonging and inclusion from within the college community. The faculty, staff, and fellow students embraced them warmly, fostering an environment of support and cultural exchange. This inclusive atmosphere not only facilitated their language learning but also allowed the students to forge meaningful connections and friendships that transcended geographical boundaries.
As another student expressed: “I recommend this experience because it has given my life a 180-degree turn, it was perfect. I think I am a whole different person than I was before I came here.”
The program's well-rounded itinerary, with educational tours, excursions, and a welcoming community, ensured that the students left with cherished memories and valuable insights that will shape their personal and academic growth in the years to come.
