person with workbook

Submitted by Jenny Lauten, Pathways Coordinator

Did you know that SLC allows employees to earn credit for college-level learning gained outside the classroom? Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) can be applied to work, volunteering, self-study, travel, military training, or other life experiences.

PLAR is completed on a course-by-course basis. If a connection can be made between demonstrated learning and the course learning outcomes, you may be eligible to apply for PLAR.

PLAR application deadlines for the 2024-2025 academic year:

Fall 2024: September 17, 2024
Winter 2025: January 17, 2025
Spring/Summer 2025: May 16, 2025

PLAR FAQ

What is PLAR?
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) at St. Lawrence College allows you to earn credit for college-level learning gained outside the classroom through work, volunteering, self-study, travel, military training, or other life experiences.

Do I have to be enrolled in a program to apply for credit through PLAR?
No, enrollment in a program is not required to apply for credit through PLAR! If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for any eligible PLAR course. Simply complete the PLAR self-assessment form to get started on your PLAR journey.

How do I demonstrate my prior learning?
Most commonly, you can demonstrate your prior learning through an educational portfolio submission or a challenge assessment. The appropriate method is determined in consultation with the Pathways Coordinator and assigned PLAR assessor. During this process, you’ll formally compare your learning experiences with the course learning outcomes.

What is the fee for employeers to PLAR a course?
The fee for employees to PLAR a course is $20.00, which is the same as the employee cost of taking a credit course!

How many course credits can I obtain through PLAR?
Through PLAR, you can earn up to 75% of the credits required for a college certificate, diploma, or advanced diploma program, or up to 50% for a degree program. Please note, some programs may have other residency requirements related to licensing and credentials.

What assistance is available during the PLAR process?
For help with your PLAR application, your first point of contact is Jenny Lauten, our tri-campus Pathways Coordinator. Jenny will guide you through the process and provide support along the way. You can reach Jenny by emailing Pathways@sl.on.ca
