St. Lawrence College held its annual tri-campus SCTL Program Graduation where faculty, staff, and academic leaders gathered to celebrate the achievements of program participants that successfully completed a faculty development program during the 2022-23 academic year. This year’s celebration included graduates from the Contemporary Educator Program (CEP) and the Teaching Effectiveness Program (TEP).

The CEP program is a two-year endeavor that is part of the official onboarding process of full-time faculty where participants are required to engage in various discussions about their teaching practice. The first year of the program is delivered in a hybrid format with in-person sessions held on each campus coupled with virtual sessions throughout the year. These sessions include discussions on authentic assessments, inclusive learning environments, Indigenous pedagogies, and digital teaching strategies. The CEP cohort are also asked to reflect on their practice and the learning experiences in year one by completing three program milestones in the following year. These milestones include the creation of an official Digital Learning Teaching Portfolio, Teaching & Learning Research Project, and the completion of a Leadership Development Activity. As part of our college commitment to scholarship, participants are also required to present one of these milestones at our annual Learning Connections Conference.

The TEP program was launched earlier in February 2023 as a pilot and invited part-time/partial-load faculty to gather as a cohort so that we could emulate the experience from our larger CEP program in a flexible compressed format that would meet the needs of our non-full time faculty population. TEP participants completed four modules which took place both virtually on Wednesday evenings and in-person on Saturday. The hybrid model enabled participants to complete specific learning activities that would enable them to gain more confidence in their teaching and create a sense of community that spans campus locations, programs, and instructional modalities. As part of their program milestones, TEP participants also completed a series micro teach activities that enabled them to further develop their teaching skills.

As part of the celebration, each cohort nominated a peer to act as a speaker so they can share some thoughts about the learning experience. Jonathan Cobb, a part-time professor in the School of Applied Science, spoke on behalf of the TEP cohort and emphasized the importance of collaboration in teaching. He shared personal insights as to how the cohort infused laughter amongst the various discussions on teaching to build a safe space to learn. Sherri Taylor, a full-time Professor in the School of Arts, Media, & Design, would later take the stage to represent the CEP cohort. Sherri’s shared personal reflections on how she used her expertise in UX Design to find specific patterns and themes within her experience in the program. She would later reveal that the common element in all learning experiences within CEP was the prevalence and importance of “community” that was built amongst the participants as they visited multiples campuses and learned from others as they developed their teaching practice.

Congratulations to the 12 graduates of the CEP program and the 32 graduates of the TEP program for 2022-23.
