PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITES: CHEM 2

Analytical Chemistry is an introduction to fundamental techniques and methods of chemical analysis used by technicians in the environmental field. These methods are also extensively employed in industry, food, health and forensic sciences. The first part of the course is dedicated to building a knowledge of standard analytical concepts, reinforcing good laboratory practices and obtaining proficiency in a variety of basic laboratory methods. The student will be required to achieve a proficiency standard for fundamental analytical procedures before proceeding with the second half of the course. The second part of the course will be an introduction to instrumental methods including spectrophotometry, electrochemistry and chromatography. An emphasis throughout the course will be on the theory and practice of performing precise and accurate chemical measurements with estimates of the associated uncertainties.
