Pre-Requisites:  CIVL 14 - Mechanics of Materials, CIVL 23 - Construction Materials, CIVL 56 - Mechanics of Materials Laboratory

Soils are encountered in most aspects of Civil Engineering. Once they have been identified, they must be understood from a mechanistic point of view before they can be used in design. Aspects which influence the mechanical properties of a soil are introduced. The mechanical properties of a soil and methods used to determine these properties are studied. The influence of a soils property on a structure is considered. The course has a lab component that instructs the student on the shear and consolidation (deformation) characteristics of clays and the shear characteristics of sands.
