CIVL 2

This course will introduce students to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) concepts, applications and analysis. The course objective is to create and manage information pertaining to specific geographic areas. Topics to be covered include digital mapping, spatial database structure and design issues, sources of information for spatial databases, spatial analysis capabilities, data quality and documentation, the internet and other technology opportunities for information dissemination and analysis. These topics will all be discussed within the context of GIS for urban and regional planning and management. Students will use spreadsheet, database, GIS, SQL, web based mapping browsers, aerial photographs and geographic information systems software. Data for course exercises will be obtained from the instructor, web based land information systems and others as required.
