Event connects secondary students with area job market

CORNWALL, ON - Recognizing that some high school students will go straight into the workforce after graduation, St. Lawrence College, along with the Upper Canada District School Board, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, Job Zone d’emploi, and the Eastern Ontario Training Board have organized a one-day event to connect these students with the area job market.

Connect and WIN – Workplace Information Network, will be held on the Cornwall campus on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Participants will be able to speak to local employers about upcoming job opportunities and learn what essential skills are required to be able to do those jobs. Participants will also have a chance to familiarize themselves with the college and discover the wide variety of programs St. Lawrence College has to offer.

"We want to help prepare students for success at college and in the workplace," said Elysa Brunet, School to College to Work Initiatives (SCWI) Facilitator for the Cornwall campus of St. Lawrence College. "By getting these students in the door to events like these, hopefully they’ll see the education and training possibilities available to them."

Other SCWI programs include the highly successful Connections program, which brings in hundreds of area students in grades seven and eight to the college early in May for a day of hands-on experience with St. Lawrence College program, and the Dual Credit program which enables high school students to earn a college credit while completing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. This year, more than 100 high school students have earned a college credit or their Level 1 Apprenticeship training at one of St. Lawrence College’s campuses while earning equivalent high school credits.
