More awards for deserving College students

St. Lawrence College, Cornwall campus, celebrated its students at an Annual Student Recognition event last night. The event was held at the Ramada Inn & Conference Centre and included a dinner followed by the award presentations.

Every year, students are recognized for their academic excellence, community involvement, contributions to the quality of college life, outstanding achievement and professional potential. "The Student Recognition events illustrate the positive impact our donors and community partners can have on our students," said Chris Whitaker, president and CEO of St. Lawrence College. "Not only is it a great accolade for the students that receive the awards but also an opportunity to connect the community to our outstanding students."

Among the numerous awards and bursaries being presented this year, five new awards have been introduced: the Cornwall Police Foundation Bursary, the S.D.&G. C.A. Association Award, the Sherry Burke Memorial Bursary, the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences Entrance Bursary, and the Support Staff Local 419 Award.

Robert Tucker, coordinator of Police Foundations, is pleased that his students are being recognized for their efforts and receiving monetary help from the new bursary. "This year’s recipient, Anthony Peeters, is deserving of this award," Tucker said. "He was a program representative on the Student Union, he is a member of the Campus Crime Stoppers, and has been a regular volunteer during his two years in the program. He is also doing very well academically."

A total of 35 awards were presented to over 70 students in recognition of their success. Similar events will be taking place in Brockville and Kingston in the next two weeks.
