Medical Transcriptionist

Available at: Online part-time

Overview

This program will provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge using simulated case studies to meet the needs of the medical community for skilled medical transcriptionists.

Graduates of this program will have obtained the knowledge and skills required to compete for entry level positions in hospitals, medical clinics, physician’s offices and online transcription companies.

To enhance student success, we recommend the prerequisites even for those in the health care field. What we have found is that students currently working in health care use the skills, knowledge and terminology that is inherent to their specific field, are not prepared for other specialties and struggle through the course. For example, the person working in cardiology for the last several years may have lost much of the knowledge related to obstetrics, orthopedics, nephrology, etc.

To successfully complete this program, participants must complete eight (8) compulsory courses and two (2) electives.

    Testimonials

In 2016, I graduated from the Veterinary Assistant program at St. Lawrence College. There were a vast amount of classes offered as a part of the program, ranging from communication skills, exotic care, and laboratory practices, which expanded our knowledge of the field, allowing a variety of career choices. The small class sizes were very useful in hands-on scenarios, and when extra help was required. Immediately following the completion of the program, I had the opportunity to complete my placement at a local mixed practice animal hospital. This placement transitioned into my current position. I am working full-time as a VA in a busy practice- the first step on my career path. With the guidance and supportive measures received by the professors, as well as the skills gained while attending SLC, I have found a career I am truly passionate about.
