What is it?

  • The Ontario First Generation Bursary is for post-secondary students whose parents have never attended post-secondary studies.
  • It’s for students with financial need attending a publicly-assisted college or university in Ontario only.
  • This is an application-based bursary. You must complete the application fully and meet the eligibility requirements to be considered.
  • In 2016/17, we had over 150 completed and eligible bursary applications with 30 recipients receiving $1,000 each!

When can you apply?

The First Generation Bursary application is CLOSED for the 2017/18 academic year

The 2018/19 First Generation Bursary will be available at the end of October 2018

Are you Eligible? 

To be eligible you must meet all of these eligibility requirements

  • Neither of your Parent(s)/Guardians attended post-secondary studies anywhere in any country.
  • You’re enrolled in a certificate, diploma, or degree program at St. Lawrence College.
  • You don’t already have a post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate.
  • You’re not an international student or receiving assistance through the Second Career program.
  • You meet the citizenship and Ontario residency requirements listed in the OSAP Application for Full-Time Students.
  • You’ve met the financial need criteria of over $1,000 for this bursary.
  • Must be returning for the Winter semester.

You do not need to apply for OSAP for Full-Time Students or OSAP for Part-Time Students to be considered for this bursary.

How to Apply (Based on the 2017/18 application)

  • Download the Bursary application
  • Complete all of the following:      
    1. Eligibility & Student Declaration
    2. Personal Information
    3. What is means to be a First Generation Student at SLC - All 3 questions answered in a separate Word document

      Please be specific in your responses, as these carry significant weight in the selection process. (One sentence is not enough)

    4. Budget Form
    5. Print your Application Form/Budget Form/Word Document (with the questions and answers)

      Drop off your completed application:

      • Kingston - Jeremy Mastin & Kyle Christiansen - Welcome Centre (across from the Library)
  • Handwritten applications will not be accepted

Bursary Application Tips

  • Make sure you fit the eligibility criteria above before filling out the application.
  • Fill out the application fully, incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
  • Answer and complete the application questions to the best of your ability before you start the application - these are the main consideration when recipients are being selected.
  • The First Generation Bursary is a different application than the bursaries you can apply for through the SLC Bursaries and Scholarships department.
  • Email firstgeneration@sl.on.ca with any questions or stop by and see a member of your First Gen Team.
